Even though smartphones and tablets, have well and truly become fixtures in our lives, it seems that we do object to their use at the dinner table.
Ofcom’s recent survey revealed that 55% of those asked think that it is unacceptable to check your phone or update your status as you eat. So why do we see so many diners taking photos of their food then?
We are also bothered by fellow audience members answering calls, texting or taking photos whilst in the cinema or theatre: Benedict Cumberbatch recently asked his fans to help stop mobile phone usage during his performance of Hamlet.
So what are the basic rules then? It seems these four points cover the most annoying aspects of mobile device usage:
OTHER PEOPLE CAN HEAR YOU!
If you must take a call in a public place, then keep it short and speak in a low tone. Think about strangers around you overhearing your conversation as well as those you are with.
I AM TRYING TO WATCH THE SHOW/FILM/PERFORMANCE!
If you absolutely must text whilst in a restricted area, go outside to a more suitable location and send your message – then turn your phone off.
LOOK UP WHILST YOU ARE WALKING!
Apart from preventing you from bumping into other pedestrians, it may also stop you having an accident. And whilst you are behind the wheel of your car – don’t even think about it.
I AM A REAL PERSON!
Try not to use your mobile whilst out with friends – you are there to enjoy yourself with them not check social media for other things going on. Keep your phone with you (you will want to take selfies!) but focus on your companions, on what they are saying and look them in the eye!
Mobile phones and devices are here to stay – so let’s think about others when we use them!
