Online games=brain training

Many of us complain when friends or family are constantly playing Candy Crush saga or Clash of Clans on their smartphone or tablet – especially if it means we are being ignored.

But a new study published recently in the Journal of American Medical Directors Association says that playing online games that challenge reasoning and memory skills could have significant benefits for older people.

Research carried out in London has shown that using these so-called brain training games can improve memory and help to improve everyday tasks such as shopping, cooking, navigating public transport and dealing with personal finances. This new research, funded by the Alzheimer's Society, involved members of the public who were encouraged to play the games for 10 minutes at a time, as often as they wanted. The package of games included three reasoning tasks and three problem-solving ones, and participants were assessed, before starting the study, on a number of cognitive tests. They were assessed again after six weeks, three months and six months.

The results showed that playing this particular brain training package five times per week was the most effective way to bring about improvements, with those over 50 years of age showing significant improvement in reasoning and verbal learning skills. This new study could have important implications for preserving cognitive function in older adults and might offer an effective, easily accessible intervention to help people reduce their risk of cognitive decline later in life.
