Silver surfers' showing where there's a will, there's a way
MOST people would be of the opinion that the internet, computers, social networks and smart phones are the sole domain of the younger generation. Of course, in some cases they may be right, as new technologies can often be confusing and at times downright incomprehensible to those of a more mature age.
But there is a growing group of tech savvy pensioners out there who would scoff at the above sentiments. The ‘silver surfers’ of the internet are more than able to hold their own against more youthful computer geeks, and particularly when they live away from home.
A survey published this month by NatWest has revealed that British expats over the age of 55 are far more technologically capable than their counterparts back in the UK. Three out of four expats over 55 are regular internet users, and are much more comfortable when it comes to using Skype, paying bills or searching topics online, than their peers in the UK. Back in Britain, more than 50 per cent of over 65’s can’t use the internet without supervision, and 28 per cent have never used the internet at all.
It’s fair to say that the ‘silver surfer’ generation living abroad need to be more computer literate than their counterparts back home in order to stay in touch with family and friends. Facebook is the most popular social networking site that expat Brits over 55 like to use, but using email and Skype are other important ways of keeping in touch with loved ones.
So the expat community is pioneering this new breed of ‘silver surfers’, and showing the youth of today that granny and granddad are more than capable of texting, Skype-ing and Facebook-messaging from their sunny retirement retreats.
However, whether you’re 16 or 60, if you own a business and aren’t listed in an Online Business Directory then you might as well join the ranks of the computer illiterate pensioners in Britain. Having your business in a directory elevates you above your competition and gives you an online presence that is of vital important these days. Not being too proficient online is a flimsy excuse for not signing up to our directory, especially if you are serious about promoting your business. The expat ‘silver surfers’ are proving to all out there that where there’s a will, there’s a way.
