Keeping connected

BARCELONA will be the centre of the Mobile World this week March 2 to 5. The Mobile World Congress is expected to welcome more than 85,000 attendees from more than 200 countries, each one with a vested interest in connecting billions of people to the Internet by mobilising all the devices we use in everyday life. The event will be looking at all the trends and innovations that will help to shape the mobile market over the next 12 months – and one product that will feature highly is wireless charging.

We have all been caught out – a phone out of charge or a tablet that shuts down before we have the chance to finish a task. Then, even if you have thought to bring your charger, can you find somewhere to plug-in and recharge the battery?

Help may soon be at hand as all the major players in the market are investing in wireless charging capability. The system uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects, and once the smartphone or tablet has the necessary receiver technology then it can be charged. The transmitter half of the system is being integrated into all sorts of devices, with public spaces and even vehicles being the kind of places that will allow charging without power cords.

In the UK, for example, 50 McDonald's locations have the wireless charging pads and 10 Starbucks cafés also offer this service. It remains to be seen how quickly this system will find itself into our daily lives.
